ANDROLOLGY SPECIMEN COLLECTION PROCEDURES:
It is important to follow correct collection procedures to ensure accurate results. Proper collection procedures should be provided by submitting doctor's office. Collection procedures can also be obtained from WPA directly.

COLLECTION RECOMMENDATIONS:
Abstinence: Patients are advised to abstain from ejaculation for at least 2 days prior to submission of sample and not to exceed more than 7 days of abstinence. However, always follow primary physician’s specific directions concerning time of abstinence.
Collection Location: Wilmington Pathology is equipped & provides onsite collection facilities for Andrology specimens. However, it is not a requirement to collect onsite and sample collection can be performed offsite.
Collection Timing: Timing can be a critical component for an accurate evaluation of spermatozoa characteristics. Therefore, collection timing should be planned so that the sample arrives at our facility no later then one hour after sample collection.
Sample Transport: Patients opting to collect offsite need to ensure that the sample is not exposed to temperature extremes while in transit. The easiest way to ensure proper conditions for sample transportation is to place the sample between the legs or in a pocket while driving.

METHODS OF COLLECTION:

Method 1:

a. Collect the ejaculate directly into a sterile collection container via "dry masturbation."

Make a mental note if any of the ejaculate is “lost” during collection; estimate the amount lost and if it happened at the beginning, middle, or end of collection. This information will be required a time of specimen drop off.

b. The use of natural or artificial lubricants CANNOT be utilized since they will affect the integrity of the sample, ultimately compromising the results.

c. DO NOT collect more than One sample for the analysis regardless of sample volume, consistency, or other factors.

d. Method 1 is the preferred method of collection to ensure the most accurate results possible.

Method 2:

a. The use of a Hygene Seminal Fluid Collection Kit can be utilized to obtain an ejaculate sample.

b. This specially designed condom, contained within the Kit, allows for collection by sexual intercourse, while still maintaining the integrity of the sample. Specific directions on proper collection utilizing this method are provided in the collection kit.

c. Kits can be purchased at Wilmington Pathology prior to day of appointment
